This Conference explores how requiring attendance and completion of a partner abuse intervention program (PAIP) can be a long-term method to reduce further domestic abuse and thereby promote the best interests of children in custody/visitation cases.

Attendees will first learn what a PAIP is and how it can help some abusive intimate partners to change their abusive behaviors. You will also learn about changes made to PAIPs in Canada (the “Caring Dads” program) and how this has led to improved results. The focus will shift to a case study of how the Domestic Violence Civil Court in Winnebago County, Illinois, has incorporated a PAIP requirement in its order-of-protection and divorce cases as a condition in custody/visitation orders. The conference will conclude with a comments-and-Q&A session featuring distinguished guests from the bench and bar.
